University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking aLaboratory Research Assistant OR Specialist with previousexperience in working with animal models (preferably mouse) andcell culture to join Department of Microbiology &Immunology. The position will be filled as either anAssistant or Specialist, dependent on selected candidate'squalifications. The project involves evaluation viralpathogenesis using both in vitro and in vivo systems

Techniques used by the hired person would involve handling oflaboratory mice, injections, euthanasia, isolation of tissues,preparation of cells, sterile in vitro cell culture, proteinanalysis, PCR, neutralization assays, in vitro drug screening andother assays as needed. Suitable candidates will demonstrate awillingness to learn new techniques, motivation to be part of adynamic learning environment engaging with students and excitementto study viral pathogenesis. This position requires working inA/BSL-3 facilities. For motivated individuals, opportunities tohandle independent projects and/or publish papers as co-authors arepossible.

LABORATORY RESEARCH ASSISTANT PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activitiessuch as: general housekeeping, wipe tests, animal colonymanagement, ELISA assays, preparing solutions, media, stains, andbuffers; cultures and specimens; autoradiograms andphotomicrographs, executing biochemical procedures such as:electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, and DNA extractions,etc.
  • May perform advanced laboratory research activities such as:animal surgery, microscopy techniques, imaging techniques,recombinant DNA techniques, protein purification, andhybridizations, etc. May participate in the design of researchstudies.
  • Compile and may analyze research data using various relevantcomputer software applications.
  • Assist with literature research, editing and preparingmanuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics forpublication.
  • Perform administrative duties such as: training and guidingstudents and/or other laboratory technicians; assisting indeveloping policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratoryexperimentation; and ordering supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

LABORATORY RESEARCH SPECIALIST PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design ofresearch studies. Compile, analyze, and interpret research datausing various relevant computer software applications.
  • Independently perform day to day laboratory research activitiessuch as: general housekeeping, daily observations of animal health;collection of cultures and biological specimens for diagnostictesting and monitoring of animal health; diagnostic molecular(ELISA), bacteriological, or biological assays; breedingcolonization processes; irradiation of blood products; andexecuting biochemical or hematopoietic procedures such as: bonemarrow aspirations, complete blood count, white cell differential,electrophoresis, blotting, chromatography, PCR and DNA extractions,etc.; and may require performing psychological enrichment ofcertain species.
  • Administer day-to-day laboratory operations includingmonitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safetycompliance, developing policies and procedures, and orderingsupplies. Maintain proper operation of research equipment, ensuringproper operation records, cleaning, ordering of required componentsand explaining/resolving technical issues.
  • Conduct library research and participates in editing andpreparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computergraphics for publication. Contribute to the preparation of journalarticles and grant proposals. Presents research findings.
  • Prepare materials for research studies, including samplecollection kits and research documents.
  • Assist in the training of undergraduate and graduate students,post-doctoral, international fellows, and/or junior technicalpersonnel in the performance of a variety of laboratorytechniques.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

For Laboratory Research Assistant:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry orfield of study related to the research of the laboratory.
  • Other: May require training related to occupationalsafety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardousmaterials and/or ionizing radiation. May consider a combination ofdirectly related experience and education.

For Laboratory Research Specialist:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry orfield of study related to the research of the laboratory.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of experience including two(2) years in the relevant research specialization.
  • Other: May require training related to occupationalsafety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardousmaterials and/or ionizing radiation. May consider a combination ofdirectly related experience and education.

HIRING RANGE: $45,000 - $50,000 per year for Assistant/$60,000 - $67,000 per year for Specialist (Commensurate witheducation and experience)
